Black Bean Hummus

Black Bean Hummus

Black Bean Hummus isn't a traditional hummus recipe, you could probably classify it as a black bean dip instead. Since we are using the basic hummus ingredients and substituting black beans for the garbanzo beans we decided that we could get away with calling it hummus. If you can't find Tahini, then you can leave it out of the recipe.

As you are mixing the ingredients in the food processor, you will need to determine if the consistency is right. It should be smooth and creamy. If it is too stiff, then add water, a little at a time, and keep pulsing the food processor until the texture looks right.

We have listed two garlic cloves in this recipe. It's not an exact science, so you can add as much garlic as you like. If you like your Hummus spicy, then add a dash or two of Cayenne pepper or your favorite hot sauce to taste.

Black Bean Hummus

Ingredients:

  • 1 (16-ounce) can black beans, drained
  • 1 tablespoon tahini, optional
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

Preparation:

  1. Drain and rinse Black Beans. Don't use the juices from the can in this recipe. It will muddy the flavor.
  2. Put Black Beans, Garlic, Tahini, Cumin and Salt in a blender or food processor and pulse until ingredients are well mixed.
  3. Add Olive Oil, Lime Juice and continue blending.
  4. Add as much water as necessary for the consistency you like. It should be similar to a bean dip in texture.
