Gingerbread Cookie Recipe

gingerbread cookie

It's always good to know a good Gingerbread Cookie Recipe for the holidays. This gingerbread recipe is delicious and easy to prepare.

After they have cooled you can decorate them any way you want. Our kids love to get involved with making these cookies. They have so much fun drawing the faces and buttons on the gingerbread men. We buy tubes of different colored icing and sprinkles to decorate them with.

Some other decorating ideas include using some mini M&Ms for the buttons which you can glue on with icing, some red hot candies would also make good buttons or eyes. So let's make it a gingerbread Christmas this year and bake some great tasting cookies.

Gingerbread Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 2 eggs
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger

Preparation:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, molasses, and shortening until smooth.
  2. Rinse molasses out of the measuring cup with hot water.
  3. Stir in eggs. Combine the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and ginger; stir into the batter to make a soft dough. Add more flour if needed.
  4. Cover the bowl and refrigerate dough for at least 1 hour, or until firm.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  6. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness on a floured surface.
  7. Cut into desired shapes using your favorite cookie cutters.
  8. Place cookies onto ungreased baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until cookies appear dry in the center.

Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence.
